General Studies, B.S.

Goals:


  1. Students will be able to maximize credits accumulated in completing the Core Curriculum (Areas I-III), General Studies Core classes (Area IV), General Studies Areas of Study classes (Area V) in at least two separate academic disciplines, General Studies Electives (Area VI), and Free Electives (Area VII).
  2. Students who have changed majors or who have varied interests will be able to combine two or more disciplines in a degree program.
  3. Students who desire a liberal education or need an undergraduate degree for professional advancement on the job or who are preparing for graduate studies will be equipped to achieve their goal.

Degree Requirements


To complete the Bachelor of Science with 185 quarter credit hours and a major in General Studies students are required to take the following curriculum listed below for Area I-VII.

Area I: Communications & Humanities 20 Quarter Credit Hours
Area II: Science, Mathematics and Computers 25 Quarter Credit Hours
Area III: Social Sciences 20 Quarter Credit Hours

Total: 65 Quarter Credit Hours


Bachelor of Science Offerings


Area IV: General Studies Core 40 Quarter Credit Hours
Area V: Major Requirements 60 Quarter Credit Hours
Area VI: General Studies Electives 10 Quarter Credit Hours
Area VII: Free Electives 10 Quarter Credit Hours

Total: 120 Quarter Credit Hours


Total Bachelor of Science Requirements: 185 Quarter Credit Hours

Core Curriculum Offerings   

Area IV: General Studies Core


40 Quarter Credit Hours

Grade of “C” or better is required.

A. Humanities


(10 – 20 Quarter Hours Required)

(Courses drawn from Literature, Film, Foreign Language, Philosophy, writing courses, or any other Humanities course.)

B. Social Sciences


(10 – 20 Quarter Hours Required)

(Courses drawn from History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology courses, or any other Social Science course).

C. Science, Mathematics and Computers


(10 – 20 Quarter Hours Required)

(Courses drawn from Business, Exercise Science, Math, Natural Science, Nutrition, or any other academic discipline besides Humanities and Social Sciences).

Area V: General Studies Areas of Study


60 Quarter Credit hours

(Must be 300 level or above with required prerequisites or equivalent completed; or, on COC transfer list.)  Grade of “C” or better is required.

 

Courses chosen from 2 separate academic disciplines.

 

Area VI: General Studies Electives


10 Quarter Credit hours

(Must be 300 and above with required prerequisites or equivalent completed; or, on COC transfer list)  Grade of “C” or better is required.

Area VII: Free Electives


10 Quarter Credit Hours

(Any course offered not previously taken.)

Additional Completion Requirements


  1. Completion of at least four years of prescribed study, with at least 25% of coursework being earned at Life University.
  2. No courses used to meet core curriculum requirements may be used in Areas IV – VII.
  3. All courses used in Areas IV – VI must be passed with a “C” or better.
  4. Satisfactory completion of all courses with a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  5. A recommendation for graduation and completion of an exit interview with General Education faculty.
  6. File a petition to graduate.
  7. Administrative and student reviews of records:
    1. Registrar Office – Complete a formal academic records review
    2. Financial Aid Office – Exit interviews with a Counselor
    3. Student Accounting – “Perkins” Exit interview and rectify account balance
  8. Confirm CLP 090, FYE 101  and FYE 103  completion status requirements.
