Minor Degree Requirements Policy

Policy Statement

A student may elect to declare a minor. An academic minor within a degree program enables a  student to make an inquiry into a secondary discipline or field of study or to investigate a particular content theme. Minors are organized around a specific set of objectives or questions that are achieved through an ordered series of courses. Minors are intended to provide limited competency in the subject and consist of a minimum of 25 quarter credit hours.  Minors must be completed simultaneously with a major degree program.  Minors will be posted on the transcript.

Procedure(s)

Undergraduate students choosing to complete a minor within their bachelor’s degree will complete a defined series of a minimum of 25 quarter credit hours.  The following criteria apply:

  • A minor will consist of a minimum of 25 quarter credit hours to fulfil Area VI Minor or Elective category.
  • A minimum grade of “C” or better is required for courses associated with the minor.
  • Minors cannot be completed independent of a major. Therefore, a student cannot earn a minor after a bachelor’s degree has been earned and awarded.
  • At least 50% of the credit hours required for the minor must be upper-level course (300 level or above).
  • All upper-level courses for the minor must be completed at Life University.
  • Lower-level courses may not be substituted for upper-level course work within the minor.
  • Each program shall make available to the student the requirements for the minor: the total number of hours required, the criteria for both required and elective coursework, residency requirements (if any), and grade requirements.
  • Minors are posted on the institutional academic transcript.  Students will receive a separate minor certificate for each minor program completed.  Certificates will be issued by the respective college.
