Athletic Departments Eligibility Requirements Policy

Policy Statement

Life University Athletic Department has established a policy for participation in athletics separate from the eligibility standards of any particular sport’s governing body.  Students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA to be able to compete. The only exception to this standard is that freshman SAs have 2 quarters to establish their cumulative GPA. Therefore, the 2.0 cumulative GPA standard for these students will be determined after their second quarter of enrollment.

Missed Class

Students should not miss class for practice, weights, pictures, volunteering, or any other reason not related to Life University competitive events.  Coaches should never email faculty regarding missed classes.  All missed class communication goes through the Senior Academic Coordinator.

Certifying Continuing Eligibility

In an effort to ensure maximum vigilance and to maintain communication about eligibility requirements it will be important for coaches and the Academic Coordinator (AC) to work together in certifying eligibility.  The following process will be utilized when certifying eligibility each term.

  1. AC will gather and print all necessary information to certify eligibility.

  2. AC will enter all information into ECP software (when applicable).

  3. AC will take signed eligibility certificate to registrar to get second review.

  4. AC and coach will go through eligibility certificate and transcripts together, providing an opportunity to go through each student’s information.  It is expected that the coach questions each student and helps AC look for any potential oversights

    • Look at the performance of the last 2 or 3 terms of attendance

    • Circle any Ds or Fs

    • Look for any repeated courses

    • Look at upcoming term – are they registered for the correct number of courses?

  5. FAR and AD will be final signatures.

Eligibility of Non-NAIA Sports

The eligibility of SAs participating in a non-NAIA sponsored sport is determined by the governing body of that particular sport.  SAs must adhere to the same athletic department standards regardless of their sport’s governing body. HCs must still work with the AC in order to certify eligibility of these sports.

Certifying Initial Eligibility

Freshmen

All NAIA potential SAs must register for the NAIA Eligibility Center. As soon as you identify a new SA that you’d like to add to your team please add potential student to your shortlist in PlayNAIA.

An academic coordinator will assist the coach in tracking the students’ eligibility center to-do list and ensuring that students are submitting all necessary material.  HCs are expected to communicate this information to the PSA.

Transfers

If the potential SA is a transfer please do the following:

  1. Obtain transcripts from all previous institutions and give to an academic coordinator – this step is of critical importance.

  2. The academic coordinator will evaluate transcripts

  3. If necessary, student must register for the NAIA Eligibility Center

  4. Student must fill out NAIA Transfer Eligibility Statement prior to first competition

  5. Get written release from previous institution (if applicable)
