PPSY 6150 - The Art of Self-Care: Mindfulness, Meditation, and the Mind/Body Connection (5-0-5)
This course will examine mindfulness, loving kindness, and insight styles of meditation in both their traditional Buddhist and contemporary presentations, as well as the growing scientific literature on mindfulness and its effects. It will also provide students with personal training through first-person engagement with mindfulness and insight meditation practices.
The concept of “mindfulness” and the practice of “mindfulness meditation” have quickly entered the mainstream, both in popular culture and society, and in the field of psychology and psychotherapy. Since the ability to regulate one’s attention and emotions constitutes an essential part of leading a happy and flourishing life, mindfulness is also now regarded as an important part of positive psychology, and as an important positive psychology intervention. The body of research related to mindfulness and its health benefits is increasing steadily. This course will examine a few styles of mindfulness practice—both traditional and contemporary—to understand mindfulness in its full cultural and historical context. It will also introduce the most important recent scientific literature on mindfulness, and will introduce students to the experiential practice of mindfulness as well as the related and closely aligned practices of vipassana and loving- kindness (mettaN/A) meditation.
