Turning Technologies (Clickers) Policy

Policy Statement


Background

Increasing student engagement with active learning and use of formative assessment in lecture settings by using smart technologies was introduced by the QEP. The QEP staff has trained faculty on the use of Student Response Systems by Turning Technologies - TurningPoint RF-LCD card (also known as “clickers”) since 2011. In Fall Quarter 2016, an upgrade to the Cloud version of Turning Technologies is required. However, a significant upgrade cost would be imposed if every student were required to continue to purchase the technology/device. The institution performed a survey of all faculty and only a small percentage of faculty utilize the Turning Point Technology on an on- going basis. Therefore, the need for the revised Policy Statement.

In essence, only students registered for courses requiring the technology/device will be required to purchase the technology/device, similar to a required textbook or other equipment.

Change Required: A revised Policy Statement for Syllabi must reflect required registration of personal WiFi enabled devices and/or clickers for the new Cloud version of the software. The software is planned to roll out will over the Fall Quarter 2016 and the use of the new platform will begin Winter Quarter 2017. The revised policy statement must be added to the course syllabus, which will require the inclusion to be reviewed and approved by the college curriculum committees.

Review and Approval: The Academic Affairs Committee has approved the revision and requests the Academic Council review and approval on the revised Policy Statement for the course syllabus-with Clicker- and recommend to the Provost for approval. Following Provost approval, the revised policy will go to the respective college curriculum committees to adopt a University Syllabus Template, with Clicker. In order to differentiate usage, it is suggested to have two templates:

  • University Syllabus Template
  • University Syllabus Template, with Clicker

Upon recommendation and approval of the Academic Affairs Committee (7/26/16) and the Academic Council (7/28/16), the following is submitted to the Provost for approval.

Only courses requiring use of Turning Technology Learner Response Device(s) will be required to include the revised policy statement in the course syllabus:

Syllabus Policy Statement:

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: To enable students to more fully participate in the learning process, the Turning Technologies response application will be used in lecture in this course.

Each student must purchase a RF ResponseCard (clicker) device and/or Response Ware license from the Life University bookstore. The Turning Technologies Response Ware license will allow you to register and use your “clicker” (RF•ResponseCard) and/or your own device(s), including Wi-Fi- enabled smartphone, tablet, iPad and/or laptop computer, to participate in the classroom assessment activities.

Instructions to register your clicker and/or personal device(s) on the Turning Technology Cloud website will be provided by your instructor via a Blackboard Announcement and in class.

By the first class, you must obtain a Turning Technologies Response Ware License, which is available in the Life University Bookstore.

Your Turning Technologies registered device cannot be used by any other student for any reason. You must have one of your registered device( s) with you during all class sessions.

Lost, damaged or non-working devices must be reported to your instructor immediately in class so that temporary alternate arrangements may be determined by the instructor. The student is responsible for having a functional device by the beginning of the next class.
