Provisional Contract – a three-quarter contract that requires successful completion of a combination of Transitional Math, English, and Writing course(s) and other academic readiness courses while maintaining attendance and other academic success indicators.
POLICY TITLE
Academic Advising for Provisional Undergraduate Students Policy
POLICY STATEMENT
Undergraduate students who are admitted on a provisional basis are placed on a Provisional Contract at the beginning of their quarter of entry. Once the provisions of the Provisional Contract have been satisfied, the student will continue as a regular status student. If the provisions of the Provisional Contract are not satisfied, the student will be academically dismissed.
Students who fall below a 2.0 cumulative GPA will be placed on academic probation for the students’ next quarter and an academic performance contract will be developed. If the provisions of the academic performance contract are not satisfied within three quarters, the student will be academically dismissed. If the student meets the standards of the academic performance contract, then the student will continue as a regular status student.
PROCEDURE(S)
Provisionally admitted students are assigned an Academic Advisor and a Student Success Coach. The Academic Advisor will be responsible for documenting completion of the provisional contract. The Student Success Coach will provide bi-weekly updates to the Academic Advisor for each provisionally admitted student.
The provisional contract may include requirements such as, but not limited to:
- Attendance in Math, English, and other academic readiness courses.
- Attendance in academic success strategy workshops.
- Participation in tutoring.
- Weekly meetings with the Student Success Coach.
- Successful completion of courses.
Provisional undergraduate students must do the following:
- Students new to the University must meet with their Academic Advisor prior to the beginning of the quarter in which they are to enter the University. Returning students must make an appointment with their Advisor during week 7 of the quarter to determine their schedule for the following quarter.
- Register for no more than 15 credit hours in the first quarter at Life University, three of which must be LFS 105 Academic Strategies. The student’s Advisor must approve all other course selections.
- Complete all required developmental courses and LFS 105 with a grade of “C” or higher.
- Successfully complete up to three quarters with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
- Successfully complete a minimum of 26 quarter credit hours.
Students who successfully complete the requirements of their provisional contract may exit their contract prior to the completion of a third contract, with Dean’s approval. If a new provisional student does not meet or fulfill items 1 and 2 of the above prior to the start of the quarter, they will be administratively dropped from all courses.
Provisionally admitted students will be given stipulations to come off contract. The student will have up to three quarters to complete the stipulations. Provisional students who then go on a probation contract, for earning or maintaining less than a 2.0 GPA, will be reviewed each quarter. If it is mathematically impossible for a student to reach the required 2.0 GPA or 26 credit hours, the student will be dismissed.
