Facilities Management Inclement Weather Procedures for Safety

Policy Statement

In the event weather conditions present the possibility of frozen ground hazard to pedestrian foot traffic, the Facilities Management Grounds Department will follow the following process to insure safety and pedestrian awareness:

Procedure(s)

1. Facilities Management will maintain a list of emergency contact numbers to reach Grounds crew members should immediate action be needed as it relates to weather conditions and potential hazard avoidance before, during and after regular business hours.

2. Facilities Management will elicit the assistance of the Life Community should the temperature drop below 36 degrees by releasing a Daily Wire alerting them to possible slippery conditions due to weather, to exercise caution when walking on anywhere on campus and to report via email or the School Dude work order system any areas of unsafe or untreated conditions that may require additional attention.

3. At any time during normal operating hours should the temperature reach 36 degrees or below, the Grounds Department staff will canvas the campus, first observing all known areas of potential hazard, secondarily applying treatment as necessary to minimize, if not eliminate the hazard.

4. Grounds Department has identified an inventory of known susceptible areas-see Campus Map attachment- campus wide where standing water may freeze and pose a slipping hazard. i.e.

   1. Stairs-especially metal stairs

   2. Walkways, sidewalks near water features

   3. Lower lying pedestrian pathways

   4. Walkways shaded from sunlight

   5. Parking areas

5. Grounds Department will maintain an inventory of hazard cones, sand, salt, ice melt and ice removal tools in advance as necessary to treat and/or remove potential hazards.

6. After treatment of any potentially hazardous areas, a Hazard Cone will be placed in proximity to alert pedestrian traffic to the potential slippery area.

7. Grounds Department will create a work order in the CMMS SchoolDude to memorialize action needed and taken.

8. Grounds Department staff will arrive on campus in sufficient time and prior to the arrival of students, faculty, staff and visitors during potential freezing circumstances to investigate and treat any areas where a potential hazard may be present.

9. Facilities Management will coordinate with Campus Safety insuring any safety issues are closely monitored and addressed.
