POLICY TITLE

 COC Dismissal Policy

POLICY STATEMENT

A student who is on academic probation will be dismissed by the Dean or their designee at the end of the quarter if they do not meet the terms of their academic contract. The first time the student qualifies for academic probation and placed on academic contract, they will be given the opportunity for a pre-emptive appeal to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Students who have been placed on probation a second time after previously being removed from probation may be dismissed by the CAO, without the opportunity to appeal.

Final dismissal in the College of Chiropractic (COC) results if a student is dismissed a second time. There is no appeal for final dismissal.

PROCEDURE(S)

When a student is on the second quarter of academic probation prior to dismissal, they may pre-emptively appeal their possible dismissal to the COC Dismissal Appeals Committee. Appeals for dismissal shall be reviewed by the COC Dismissal Appeals Committee, composed primarily of faculty members, who will submit a formal recommendation to the CAO. The COC Dismissal Appeals Committee is required to provide written documentation of committee decisions. Additionally, the COC Dismissal Appeals Committee must provide students the right to submit written statements or attend appeal hearings.

The final decision is up to the CAO. If the CAO approves accepting the appeal, the student will be allowed to register for courses within 2 quarters of receiving the decision and have one quarter in which to be removed from academic probation by fulfilling all terms of the academic contract. If they do not register within 2 quarters, they will have to reapply to the program and be evaluated for readmission through the COC Admissions Committee. Readmission is not guaranteed. If the student is dismissed again after approval from the CAO for the additional quarter, then the student will be considered academically dismissed and will no longer be eligible for readmission.

If the student appeals to the COC Dismissal Appeals Committee and their appeal is not recommended for and approved by the CAO, they may be considered for readmission after completing the requirements of the DC Reinstatement Policy AS.007. If the student is dismissed again after returning to the program under the Reinstatement policy, the student will be considered academically dismissed and will no longer be eligible for readmission.
