Policy Title
Unearned Military Tuition Assistance and Schedule of TA Returns Policy
Policy Statement
Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. If a student drops or withdrawals before completing 60% of the course (11 week courses Thursday of week 7, 1st 5 weeks Tuesday of week 4, 2nd 5 week Thursday of week 9) the Department of Defense requires that Life University (LU) return any unearned TA funds. Life University (LU) will calculate the amount of unearned TA funds using the official last date of attendance, as determined by LU attendance records. The last date of attendance is used to determine the number of days completed. When a student completely withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of TA funds originally awarded. Students may owe a portion of their assistance back to the University and military branch. The student is responsible for all balances on their student account.
In instances when a service member stops attending due to a military service obligation, LU will work with the affected service member to identify solutions that will not result in a student debt for the returned TA funds in compliance with the DOD policy.
This policy serves to fully inform students receiving military tuition assistance of the required actions the University must take to comply with the DOD Memorandum of Understanding Return Policy for Military Tuition Assistance funds rules and align with the return of unearned student aid rules applicable to the Federal Student Aid as required under section 484B of the Department of Education Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.
Procedure(s)
This policy applies only to students receiving Military Tuition Assistance (TA). This tuition assistance is a benefit that is available only while the student is in the service. This policy does not apply to Veterans or Veterans benefits. Refund calculations apply to any student who is attending Life University and drops or withdraws within 60% (11-week courses Thursday of week 7, 1st 5 weeks Tuesday of week 4, 2nd 5-week Thursday of week 9) into the period of enrollment for which the student has received TA. The amount of unearned TA that is returned is based on the date of withdrawal from the course. Once a student has completed more than 60% of the period of enrollment, all their assistance has been earned (by the school) and will be retained by the university.
