POLICY TITLE

Multiple Majors For Undergraduate Students Policy

POLICY STATEMENT

A multiple major is a program of study that meets the requirements of two or three distinct majors. The program of study consists of courses required to meet the degree requirements for each of the two, or three, majors.

Matriculated baccalaureate students may choose to declare a double or triple major. Undergraduate students in good standing with a 3.0 GPA after earning a minimum of forty-five quarter hours, may declare a double major or a triple major. General education core courses may be used across multiple undergraduate programs; however, students may not duplicate courses for credit toward degree completion without prior Dean approval.

PROCEDURE(S)

Students may choose to multiple major by declaring a secondary, or tertiary, major in another discipline within the College of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies. Declarations must be made by Week 10 of the quarter previous.

Students must complete the Undergraduate Multiple Major Authorization Form, which is available from the Registrar’s Office, and submit the completed form to the Registrar’s Office. The first major must be designated as the primary program of study on the form.

Students adhere to the core curriculum for their primary major. With the permission of the Dean, students may share a limited number of credits between the primary, secondary, or tertiary majors.

Declaring a second or third major may mean that the student will need to complete more credits than the original degree or major requires. Students who major in Interdisciplinary Studies are not permitted to select a secondary major due to the nature of this program. Likewise, Interdisciplinary Studies cannot be added as a secondary or tertiary major. Once earned, the additional majors will appear on a student’s transcript and students will receive a separate diploma for each program.

The student’s program of study for the double or triple major should be developed in consultation with the student’s academic advisor. In the planning process, careful attention is needed to ensure that the student can complete all the requirements for all majors within a 150% timeframe.

Students in good standing are eligible to be enrolled in multiple majors. Students who are not making satisfactory academic progress in multiple programs will be administratively withdrawn from the second and/or tertiary program(s) to ensure academic focus on a single program of study.

Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the Graduation Coordinator in the Registrar’s Office to verify that the graduation requirements for their portion of the double or triple major have been satisfied.
