The overall learning objectives for a learner enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Biology degree program are to:

  1. Exhibit proficiency in their knowledge of standard concepts in biology, mathematics, chemistry, and physics.
  2. Make valid observations, perform scientific experiments, and analyze their results.
  3. Formulate a well written scientific lab report.
  4. Design a well-controlled scientific experiment to test their hypothesis.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to critically read and digest primary scientific information presented through literature and various media.
  6. Discuss current biology related topics.
  7. Demonstrate an appropriate use of standard laboratory equipment and technology.
  8. Independently follow a standard scientific laboratory protocol.
  9. Exhibit the ability to collaborate with others in a group setting to achieve a common goal.
  10. Successfully prepare and deliver an articulate presentation on a current biology related topic.
  11. Compile information from various sources to compose a well written essay or term paper.
  12. Assess and predict wide spread implication arising from life science related policy decisions.
  13. Explain and defend contradicting viewpoints in a life science related discussion.

Degree Requirements


Students receiving a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree must complete a minimum total of 188 quarter credit hours of instruction.

Area IV: Natural Science Core 30 Quarter Credit Hours
Area V: Advanced Science Requirements 61 Quarter Credit Hours
Area VI: Advanced Science Electives 20 Quarter Credit Hours

Areas I, II, III


Core Curriculum Offerings      

Biology students are strongly advised to complete BIO 111 (General Biology I) and CHM 111 (General Chemistry I) in Area III B as these courses are essential prerequisites for future coursework within the program of study.

Additionally, a grade of “C” or better is required for all courses in Area I and Area III.

Area VI: Biology Electives


20 Quarter Credit Hours

Grade of “C” or better is required.

  • Any 300, 400, or 500 level BIO, CHM, ENV, HME, NTR, or SHS course not previously included.

Area VII: General Electives


17 Quarter Credit Hours

  • For this area students may use any course not previously taken.

Additional Completion Requirements


  1. Completion of at least four years of prescribed study, with at least 25% of coursework being earned at Life University.
  2. Satisfactory completion of all in Areas IV – VI courses with a minimum grade of C. All BIO, CHM and PHS courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C.
  3. Satisfactory completion of all courses with a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  4. A recommendation for graduation and completion of an exit interview with the Natural Sciences faculty.
  5. File a petition to graduate.
  6. Administrative and student reviews of records
    1. Registrar Office – Complete a formal academic records review
    2. Complete Exit Counseling, if applicable, online at www.StudentLoans.gov
    3. Student Accounting – rectify any account balance.
